How to Edit a Terraria .plr Character and Keep a Backup

Treat the character file like a save: verify the name, record changes, and confirm recovery first.

01

Is my Terraria player file uploaded?

The free Terraria character editor: open and edit local .plr saves in your browser. Modify appearance, health, mana, and inventory slots with instant safe export and backups.

  1. Choose a supported local Terraria .plr file; strict validation reads only the explicitly supported character and inventory fields.
  2. Review the parsed character preview, then change supported values while validation prevents a structurally invalid export.
  3. Download a separate backup and edited .plr result; the original file on your device is never overwritten.

02

Is my Terraria player file uploaded?

No. A supported .plr file is read and processed locally in your browser and is not sent to Visualiquid.

03

How does the editor protect my character save?

The selected file is never overwritten. The workspace validates supported fields and provides separate backup and edited downloads so you can keep the original.

04

Which .plr save versions are supported, and where are character files located?

Only the standard desktop .plr format IDs listed in the compatibility table are accepted. Windows: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Players; macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Players; Linux: ~/.local/share/Terraria/Players. Modded and unlisted formats are rejected; mobile compatibility is not assumed.

You can customize character appearance (hair, skin, eyes, shirt, undershirt, pants, and shoe colors), edit current and maximum life and mana, adjust game difficulty, and edit item IDs, stack counts, and prefixes across your 58 inventory slots safely in your browser.

05

Test one edit and know how to restore the original

Close Terraria before copying a player save. Keep the original outside the active Players folder, then make a single visible change such as a hair color. Download both the original backup and edited .plr with distinct names so you can identify them later.

Test the edited copy with the same game version. Check the character’s appearance and the specific field you changed before continuing play. If it does not load or the result is unexpected, close the game and restore the untouched backup; do not repeatedly edit the only remaining copy.

Worked example

Edit a Terraria .plr and keep a recoverable backup

Use an existing player save. The editor does not create a character from an empty file or modify a world.

  1. Close Terraria, keep a separate copy of your player save, and open the .plr in this tool. Check the parsed character before making changes.
  2. For a first edit, change one appearance color. Review health, mana and the 58 inventory slots separately; item IDs and prefixes must match your game version.
  3. Download the original backup and edited .plr separately. With the game still closed, test the edited copy; restore your untouched backup if the result is not what you intended.
Accepted file format IDs
269, 270, 271, 272, 273, 274, 275, 276, 277, 278, 279, 315, 316, 317
Editable fields
Appearance, hair and colors; current/max life and mana; difficulty; 58 inventory slots. Unrelated fields are preserved.
Compatibility scope
Reviewed standard desktop .plr layouts only. Modded layouts and unlisted versions are rejected. No promise is made for every future or mobile save format.
